Abstract
This 9000-word chapter provides an international overview of the varied structures and processes of second-hand retailing in Europe and North America, from 1600-2000. The chapter draws on original research, as well as providing a synthesis of existing scholarship, to argue that second-hand retail was, for much of this period, far more segmented and widely experienced than previously thought; and that moving beyond the areas of second-hand exchange which have dominated the scholarship to date (textiles/clothing; and high-end 'antiquities' and fine art), provides a more complex map of engagement on the part of consumers, with 'used' goods.
