Abstract

This paper is the introduction to a special section of the Journal of Ottoman Studies on the subject of early modern Ottoman-European diplomacy and diplomatic practice, arising from a workshop held at the University of St Andrews in 2014. It sets out the conference organisers' thoughts on the state of the field, and the potential contributions made by the papers included in the special section.
