Abstract
Wireless communication systems follow fixed spectrum assignment policies which lead to overall inefficient spectrum usage in these days. Future wireless deployments will be conceived on a fully cognitive basis in which cognitive devices opportunistically access available spectrum and use it. This paper presents and investigates novel algorithms for utilising available spectrum in an efficient way to maximise spectrum utilisation and opportunity index for two sharing UMTS operators. It is shown in this paper that proposed algorithms increase revenue for both operators without sacrificing the quality of service. A multi-operator DSA simulator has been developed to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms and it is shown that spectrum opportunity index gains up to 33% can be achieved.
