This chapter introduces the basic theories of micro-and macro-economics in order to provide a foundation for analyses of housing issues, and to apply theory to specific housing policies, notably rent control in the private rented sector and rent-setting in the social rented sector. The chapter focuses on:
Demand and supply and the determination of market equilibrium.
Price, income and supply elasticities.
Price controls and the market: an example of the effects of rent control and the effects of short- and long-run supply elasticities.
A case study—an economic analysis of the problems of rent-setting in the social rented sector.
