Using a fully coupled 3-dimensional numerical model, predictions of the changes to the morphology for equiaxed and columnar crystals in the presence of an external magnetic field are calculated. Significant changes include deflection of the dendrite arms, changes to the tip velocity and initiation of secondary branching. The changes to the morphology are also highly dependent on both the orientation and strength of the magnetic field. The mechanism for these changes can be identified by investigating into the Thermoelectric Magnetohydrodynamics of the system. A wide variety of unexpected flow features are predicted in the vicinity of the solid front, including global circulations that encompass a dendrite, microcirculations around the dendrite tips, inter-dendritic flow between the secondary arms and complex helical flow along the dendrite tips. This numerical investigation provides a theoretical foundation of how the employment of external magnetic fields may be used to influence and control solidification processes.
