The last decades have seen a remarkable growth in trade activities. The intensification of trade relations has created more opportunities for trade disputes. The World Trade Organization (WTO) with a new more legalized dispute settlement system has influenced trade conflicts. WTO growth has been paralleled by a dramatic proliferation of preferential trade agreements that have favored regional trade liberalization but have created new risks, in particular a greater risk of new protectionism and of blocking multilateralism. Many trade disputes have arisen because while the world’s economy has become more global, policies are still national and influenced by domestic interest groups.
