Abstract

Direct melting of scrap material by induction heating for high melting temperature Ti alloys is investigated using numerical models. The commercial package COMSOL is used to investigate power dissipation in the melt zone, efficiency and coil voltage variation according to the number of crucible segments, frequency and current magnitude. The in-house pseudo-spectral code SPHINX for the coupled turbulent fluid flow, thermal and electromagnetic fields within the time varying fluid volume contained by the free surface and partially the solid crucible wall is used for the fluid dynamics. The unsteady model for the particle tracking is implemented using two methods: a direct Lagrangian particle path computation, and a drifting concentration model. The final stage of dynamic solidification front determines the location of various impurities.
