Abstract

Theorists differ in their views on sources of errors in learning a second language. The article examines two opposing viewpoints and the implications for teachers. The author advocates an approach to teaching and testing which incorporates the strengths of both contrastive analysis and error analysis and gives practical examples of how this can be carried out.
