Abstract

The need to teach computer security to students and the need to keep open access to their teaching networks for the use of such students poses universities themselves with security problems. Firstly, are they unwittingly educating the next generation of malicious IT activists e.g. hackers, virus-writers, denial of service attackers? Secondly, are they opening themselves to attacks from their own students and external parties because of their open access policies? The broader question is whether lecturers are sufficiently addressing the ethical issues regarding the teaching of computer security and their responsibilities to students, the public and to their university. Ongoing research at the University of Greenwich has been collecting data on security incidents and reports work in progress so far, in an attempt to widen the ethical debate and to promote collaboration with other institutions.
