Abstract
This chapter examines literary tourism as a form of cultural travel, shaped by the relationships that exist between literature, place, and the imagination. It traces its historical evolution from pilgrimages and the Grand Tour to contemporary practices and defines key concepts and typologies. The chapter analyses major literary tourism forms, including biographical sites, imaginative landscapes, socially constructed attractions, places of literary reputation, and tours and trails. It also considers stakeholders, issues of authenticity and commodification, and the growing influence of media and technology. The chapter ends by highlighting literary tourism’s adaptability and its future which will be shaped by digital innovation and sustainable practice. This will ensure that tourism will continue to engage with stories, authors and readers to create meaningful places.
