Abstract
Purpose: Despite the perceived usefulness of digital technologies in driving circularity in businesses and supply chains, some managers still hold reservations for technology adoption. This study investigates the essential considerations in the design of user-interface for digital technologies and how this stimulates managers’ utilization towards Circular Supply Chain Management (CSCM).
Research approach: Our study follows a qualitative approach. Data was obtained by interviewing 12 managers of e-commerce firms across UK. Using Nvivo, thematic analysis was conducted on the dataset following Braun & Clarke’s six steps.
Findings and originality: We unravel some critical behavioural and technical factors responsible for managers’ stimulus response to technology adoption for circular economy in supply chains. Specifically, three central themes emerged: Adaptability, Aggregation & Automation (Tripple A’s); Muda and user-friendly architecture. The originality of our study lies in the proposed model for synergy between humans and digital technologies to minimize waste towards achieving circularity objectives in supply chains.
Research Impact: We explore the micro-foundations of Human-Computer- Interaction (HCI) and how it stimulates managers response to technology adoption. Through an integration of two principal theories, Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), we produce a framework; Stimulus-organism-response in technology adoption for CLSCM. Consequently, we extend the arguments of the TAM to include managers’ beliefs and stimulus response as core determinants of technology utilization.
Practical impact: Our study argues that user-interface design plays a crucial role in influencing managers’ decision to engage digital technologies for CSCM. We therefore offer managers some new considerations for the engagement of digital tools in general and particularly in the utilisation of digital systems for promoting circularity objectives in supply chain management.
