Additional Information: [1] Published in Ritið (2011), Volume 11, Issue 1 - Þema: Háskólinn í krísu? / theme: University and the crisis?. [2] Ritið is a journal published on behalf of the Centre for Research in the Humanities, University of Iceland. [3] This special issue of Ritið, includes articles based on papers given at the earlier conference, featuring academics from the University of Iceland and Bifrost University, held 20 November 2010, hosted by Ritið and the EDDA Center of Excellence to discuss the responsibilities of universities in times of crisis. In the Special Issue of Ritið, academics discuss the University in the past and the present, analyzing it as societal institution and contextualizing it historically. In the wake of the Icelandic economic collapse of 2008, and the subsequent social, cultural and economic crisis, questions were raised about the responsibility of the academic community, about its ability to act as a resisting force to ideological hegemony and about its role in conveying alternative truths. This Special Issue of Ritið engages these questions, focusing on the University as a site for unconditional academic, cultural and societal debates.
