Abstract

The gel melting points, Tm, of PVC gels in five dialkyl phthalates have been obtained for gels set at temperatures between 0 and 50°C and for PVC concentrations between 40 and 100 gl−1. Tm increases with increasing size of the phthalate, with increasing concentration, c, of the polymer and with decreasing setting temperature of the gel. The effect of phthalate size is as predicted by Flory's theory of the effect of solvents on polymer melting points; the variation with concentration satisfies the Eldridge and Ferry relationship:

which enables the heat of formation of network junction points, δHx, per network chain to be obtained. The increase in Tm with decreasing setting temperature correlates with an increase in −δHx.
