Abstract

In the marine environment, there is increasing attention on an ecosystem approach to fisheries, but understanding the cultural services derived from aquatic ecosystems and the coastal zone is poorly understood and there is no agreed consensus for the evaluation of cultural ecosystem services. Often the data, models and methods involved in valuing cultural services focus on economic approaches but the intangible cultural services of ecosystems also require more qualitative approaches that cannot be reduced to an economic metric and require methods that integrate natural and social science. This presentation puts forward the idea that sense of place can be used to make visible a range of social and cultural values that emerge from the process of marine fishing as cultural services. Sense of place is an underused concept in resource management in general and within fisheries management in particular but it has potential to contribute to the evaluation of cultural services in a way that is accessible to a broader range of stakeholders, including policy makers and those involved in developing sustainable communities. We draw on work undertaken as part of two Interreg 4a projects – CHARM III (Channel Integrated Approach to Marine Resource Management) and GIFS (Geography of Inshore Fishing and Sustainability) to illustrate the potential for a sense of place approach within an ecosystem services framework.
