Abstract

Poverty and financial exclusion are key societal concerns that have particular significance for the financial services sector and for its contribution to sustainable development. NGOs are playing a growing and evolving role in widening access to sustainable financial services in developed and developing counties. This paper explores the approach adopted by microfinance NGOs to engage with financial exclusion and considers their potential for contributing to the development of the CSR agenda in a developing country and post conflict context. The study finds that microfinance NGOs do engage with CSR, particularly in terms of the economic and ethical dimensions, are committed to addressing financial exclusion and can act as a catalyst for mainstream banks to consider involvement in microfinance. However, the NGOs face constraints related to their status and there is need for more social impact reporting and local accountability. While links between banks and NGOs are in their infancy, there is much scope for synergistic gains from such arrangements which are crucial to building an inclusive financial system.
