Abstract

Fluoride varnish (FV) programmes are delivered in many UK primary schools. For children to take part parents must provide their written consent (Department of Health 2006). This is intended to demonstrate parent’s informed decision on the subject. Some parents refuse to give their consent, but a larger number do not respond to the consent request at all (Hardman et al 2007). This response pattern is more common in low income areas with high decay rates in children (Dyer et al 2008)

This results in some children being excluded from these health promoting programmes, potentially increasing dental inequalities.

This research investigates parents’ views on, and experience of, the consent processes used in the London Borough of Enfield, where a FV programme is delivered by the Community Dental Service Oral Health Promotion team.
