Abstract

This chapter frames the articles gathered in this volume within the theoretical debates and analytical controversies that have surrounded the study of copulas in formal linguistics. We will first present the empirical facts, and then move to how they have been analysed, concentrating on a number of problems: the nature of copulas; the types of copular sentences and whether they can be reduced to one single underlying structure; the factors that rule the competition between copulas in languages with more than one, and the use of copulas beyond predication.
