Abstract

Taking a qualitative longitudinal approach, this chapter draws on interview data from a study of offenders and ex-offenders who sentenced to probation supervision in 1997/1998. The chapter examines the experiential and narrative processes inherent in trying to desist from crime. The chapter argues that probation officers' efforts to make positive interventions in the lives of offenders may be successful, even where considerable time has passed since the end of a probation order. This has implications for a wide array of criminal justice interventions.
