Abstract

Held across three University of Greenwich gallery spaces, this ACE and Paul Mellon Centre supported exhibition is a survey of Stockwell Depot, a pioneering London artists' studio collective established in 1967. The exhibition concentrates on the initial 12 years, during which the studios held yearly exhibitions and developed an international reputation as a centre for abstract art. In addition, the Depot was an early and influential model of artists occupying former industrial premises, cited in subsequent initiatives, including the SPACE occupation of St Katherine’s Dock in 1968 and Greenwich Artists Studios Association. The exhibition aims to place the debates around art and studio practice that emerged from the Depot in a historical context and explore the resonance of that legacy today.
