Abstract

The Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) is an international organisation of 34 member countries that aims to promote sustainable economic growth and financial stability through the liberalization of the global economy. It has played a significant role in tourism policy-making internationally since the middle of the twentieth century through activities including the publication of reports on countries’ tourism policies, reviews of thematic areas in the global economy of relevance to tourism and through the publication of internationally recognized statistical series relating to tourism. Although the OECD does not create policy itself, it seeks to influence and inform policy-making through the engagement of its member countries in its work. Currently, the OECD aims to support sustainable tourism development, increase the competitiveness of the tourism industry, improve international co-operation in the tourism arena and to do this through influencing policy reform at the national level.
