Abstract

A quiet man yearns to escape the routine of his monotonous existence. Reverie is a mime and physical theatre performance directed by Jillian Wallis, with Daniele Ridolfi performing and musical counterpoint by Kester Hynds. The performance was created jointly between British theatre maker Wallis and Italian mime artist Ridolfi with a research incentive to negotiate different cultural approaches to comedy. The devising and rehearsal process applied the respective training in techniques of physical theatre and mime of director and performer to create a new piece of work that would speak to international audiences. In so doing, Reverie capitalized on the specific sense of humour of both creators, arguably fusing a commedia dell'arte slapstick style with a more typically English reserve and self-deprecation. The question of blurred reality is an ongoing research interest. Thematically, the performance asks: what would happen if our latent desires and hopes could erupt, temporarily? The performance was developed in several stages, receiving support financially and in kind from University of Greenwich through the BTN (Bathway Theatre Network); the Cos Festival Internacional de Moviment; and Greenwich Theatre. The production toured to Cos Festival Internacional de Moviment XVIII, Reus, Spain 2015; Luton Hat Factory, Greenwich Theatre 2016; Cinema Esperia, Bastia, Italy 2019.
