Abstract

The decision of adopting a particular innovation, either technology or idea, by an individual or community, and the time and space dimensions involved, has been well studied. Nevertheless, there is a gap in understanding the influence of socio-cultural and religious factors in the process (e.g. Karahanna et al., 2002; Meyers and Tan, 2002; Huang et al., 2003; Kalliny and Hausman, 2007). We performed a qualitative study with about 200 hours of semi-structural interviews on the diffusion of an eco-innovation in a UNESCO Heritage Site at Honghe Hani Rice Terrace in China. This site is primarily occupied by ethnic minorities with very distinct and intact culture and religious practices. Despite the obvious roles of political, economic and practical factors, we found that cultural and religious factors have different effects at different level of the society in the process of adoption and diffusion of eco-innovations.
