Abstract

The chapter develops the argument that whether someone, in their role as a member of an organization, has a duty to blow the whistle or not depends on the type of wrongdoing one is witnessing in combination with the role one has assumed. We hope that our philosophical analysis of the duty question can help to clarify where most of our confusion about this question arises. We do not answer the question of whether an individual actually has to blow the whistle – that decision is with the individual who has to take into account the risks and other particularities – but we purport to give univocal guidance on whether the individual has a duty given that she finds herself in a certain role. We aim to cover all roles that come with organizational conduct and we aim to cover all types of organizations.
