Abstract

An experiment was designed (a) to examine the weight losses caused by Sitophilus feeding on maize cultures which contained different proportions (0%, 5% and 15%) of broken grains and (b) to assess and compare the efficiency of different weight loss assessment methods on the different cultures. The weight loss assessment methods examined were the Count and Weigh, the Converted Percentage Damage, the Simple and Multiple Thousand Grain Mass (TGM) methods and the Standard Volume Weight (SVW) methods by direct comparison and by reference to a baseline calibration. Weight losses in cultures containing different proportions of broken grains were not significantly different. Further work is recommended using pests with secondary status.
